A killer new concept at the corner of East Boulevard and Scott Avenue is taking shape.
Construction is well underway at The People’s Market, an all-in-one urban market, deli, bakery and cafe taking over the space formerly occupied by 131 Main.
Owner Cory Duran sent renderings over yesterday afternoon and it’s looking sharp.
The design by d3 studio is slick and minimalist with white tile and bright pops of yellow.
It’s a major departure from the red leather booths, stone columns and wood paneling they inherited with the space, which has been vacant since 131 Main closed in April 2016 following its third fire in six years.
In addition to a full interior overhaul, they’ll also be adding a covered patio out front.
The combo deli, cafe and bottle shop will be open for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Duran says he’s also partnered with Two Scoops Creamery to sell their local homemade ice cream on site.
From the sound (and look) of it, Earl’s Grocery, an urban market on the Gold Line in Elizabeth, is likely a comparable reference point for what’s to come at The People’s Market.
Joining The People’s Market will be The Queen & Glass, a sister craft cocktail bar located next door.
Duran says that project is also moving along but will likely open on a 2- to 3-week delay behind The People’s Market.
The People’s Market is targeting an early fall opening.
Duran originally targeted a late August opening but says late September or early October is a more likely timeline.
Stay tuned for more updates as this project progresses.
Correction: An earlier version of this story listed Golden Cow Creamery as The People’s Market’s ice cream partner. It is Two Scoops Creamery.
