You’ve probably heard cool things about working at Lowe’s — what’s that about a zen garden? — but it’s not every day that you get to peek inside and see what a role on one of their most innovative teams looks like.

So, what exactly do you do?

I oversee the teams that create the digital product strategy and digital experiences for Lowes.com, LowesForPros.com, Lowe’s iOS/Android mobile apps and the mobile apps that run on the 62,000 iOS devices used by our store associates.

How long have you been doing it?

In my current role: 2 years; at Lowe’s: 5 ½ years.

Commute:

On a good day, I can get from my house in Huntersville to Mooresville in about 25 minutes. When I-77 is backed up, about 35-40 minutes via the back roads of Davidson and Cornelius.

What do you do during your commute?

Usually listen to podcasts. I listen to NPR’s “All Songs Considered” and “How I Built This”, “This American Life,” “TED Radio Hour” and “FiveThirtyEight Politics”

The team hard at work:

Do you listen to music while you work?

I’m in meetings 90% of the day, but when I have to focus on a presentation or knock out email, I’ll head to our in-house coffee shop and put on my headphones and stream music (usually through Pandora). 

What software are you a power user of?

I live in Outlook email and most of my work is presented with Powerpoint. If I’m building a presentation to show off our latest designs, you’ll see me in Photoshop or Illustrator prepping the screens (which freaks my team out!).

What’s your favorite spot for a work lunch? Your order?

Recently it’s been Novanta at Langtree. I love the P&A sandwich. But you can’t beat Aliño pizza in Mooresville. My favorite is the Toscana pizza.

Social media habits:

I usually check Linkedin multiple times a day (mainly when I get notifications on my phone). I run TweetDeck in an always-open Google Chrome tab to keep an eye on Twitter and I’ll occasionally check Facebook or Instagram to see what’s going on with my close friends. I’ve been late to the game on Snapchat but my son loves to take snaps with me using all the lenses.

To-do list manager:

I keep a to-do list in my notebook. I’ve tried digital to-do lists and nothing is as satisfying as checking off a real list!

What everyday thing are you really good at?

Speed-walking. It’s about 1/3 mile from one side of our campus building to the other and I often have back-to-back meetings on each end. I’ve learned to walk really fast (and I get a ton of steps in each day).

What’s your one favorite thing about your job?

I’m always getting challenged to think differently. I work with some of the smartest digital thinkers and they make sure we never settle and always push for what is best of our customers.

 

Sleep routine:

In bed around 10:00 pm, up at 5:15 am to work out or take my dog on a long walk.

Where do you go around Charlotte/Mooresville to get away from the office?

We love to hike and spend time outdoors so we’re at the Whitewater Center or area parks a lot of the time.

What did you eat for breakfast this morning?

Bowl of oatmeal with blueberries.

If you weren’t doing your current job, what would you be doing?

TV or film production. I did TV and film work in high school and college and loved it. That eventually lead me to a career in advertising and I crossed over into digital marketing/advertising in the early 2000s.

Favorite memory at Lowe’s so far:

We were just awarded “Web Redesign of the Year” by Internet Retailer for our redesign of Lowes.com. With the amount of work that went into the site, it was great to see the team get acknowledgment with that award.

Best job advice you’ve received:

Always challenge yourself. Never get comfortable. Continue to evolve your skills and yourself.

What’s one piece of advice you would give someone applying to a job at Lowe’s?

Go shop in our store or shop online and play the role of the customer. That’s the person you need to think about each and every day you work for Lowe’s. That’s the person we serve. If you understand their point-of-view, you’ll be successful at Lowe’s.
