An iconic local ice cream shop in University City will unveil a new look and a new menu on Saturday, June 17.
Ninety’s Ice Cream & Sandwiches has been closed for renovations as Darith Ngear and his cousins Richard Tang and Bopha Sok prepare to take over the family shop.
Ngear’s mom, Srey, who ran the shop for 12 years, is gearing up for retirement and handing Ninety’s off to the next generation.
Ninety’s has become known for inventive desserts with cult followings and viral online appeal.
The cousins say they tap recipe inspiration from their huge extended family of 30+ first cousins all located in Charlotte.
Last year, their macaron ice cream sandwiches were in such high demand they could barely keep them stocked. The success of that product helped ease Srey into retirement and inspired the cousins to start working on more signature desserts.
Their cereal milkshakes, featuring sugary childhood favorites like Fruity Pebbles, were the next to join the lineup.
Now they’ve got three more new additions…
Cookie dough pops – Chocolate-dipped chocolate chip cookie dough on a stick
Yum-ee Buns – Chinese sweet buns stuffed with ice cream and coated with toppings
S’mores pocky – A torched marshmallow on a chocolate-covered pocky stick; eat it solo or as an ice cream topping
Don’t worry, Srey’s signature savory sandwiches haven’t been dropped from the menu.
Tang says to look for a new southeast Asian-inspired sandwich menu to roll out in early July.
They’ll be doing as much as possible in house, from creating their own sauces to brining their own pastrami.
Ninety’s will host its grand reopening starting at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 17.
The first 20 people will receive a free giveaway. See you there?
