Atherton Market will open in its new temporary location on Saturday, May 27.
The market’s last day (for now) in its original Trolley Barn location was this past Saturday, May 20. Starting tomorrow, it will operate out of a new space in the Parks-Cramer Mill Building just across the parking lot.
Here are quick answers to some of the questions you might have about the change.
Why is the market moving?
In short, to make way for new development.
Incoming development projects, including significant renovations to the market’s existing building, will make the current space unusable for the duration of an estimated two-year construction project.
Rather than shut the market down, Edens, the owner/developer of the property, found a solution that would relocate it to a nearby building.
What’s the incoming Atherton Mill development project all about?
Very cool things.
The market’s temporary move is part of the major redevelopment of Atherton Mill by owner/developer Edens.
Plans for the game-changing project call for a new five-story apartment building, parking and 60,000 square feet of additional retail space.
There are also plans for significant Rail Trail improvements on the Atherton side of the Blue Line tracks, including a continuation of the east side trail that currently breaks at East Tremont Avenue. The future plan shows a path that continues that trail through the Atherton property to Publix.
Will all my favorite vendors still be there?
Yes and no.
The transition is intended to be smooth but won’t be without some shake ups.
The move to a smaller mill building means not all vendors will make it into the new space right away. The market plans to rotate vendors out seasonally to allow exposure for different businesses, and those making the initial move this weekend include:

Not Just Coffee, Bookout Blooms and Chef Alyssa’s kitchen will also be making the move but with more permanent set ups that won’t rotate seasonally.
When can I shop?
Depends on what kind of shopping you want to do.
For the full market experience, you’ll have to come by on Saturdays. Operation has been cut down from six days a week to Saturday only from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Still, some market favorites like Not Just Coffee and Bookout Blooms will operate all week, and Chef Alyssa’s Kitchen will maintain its standard class schedule.
How do I find the new space?
Atherton Market’s new home is in the Parks-Cramer Mill Building, the same space that houses Living Kitchen, Anthropologie, Warby Parker and Free People, among others.
If you’re looking for street front visibility of the market, you’ll be wandering in circles. The new space is located in the interior of the building, and you can access it through several doors — in the alley next to Big Ben Pub, next to Warby Park and to the right of Vin Master.
The back door near the bathrooms at Living Kitchen also feeds into the space if you’re dropping by after brunch.
The new Atherton Market will host a grand re-opening celebration on Saturday, June 3.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. with pastries from Carolina Artisan Bread in the morning, live music throughout the day and a low country boil at 11 a.m.
