Topgolf hasn’t even officially landed in Charlotte yet, and the city is smitten.
What is it about this chain of golf/entertainment supercenters that has Charlotteans so revved up?
Are there so many Ohio, D.C., or Atlanta transplants here that the market is thoroughly familiar with the concept? Do we all crave more activities where we can day drink and spend time outside, a la the Whitewater Center?
Regardless, the Whitehall area of southwest Charlotte is getting a Topgolf in the next few weeks and people are stoked.
Here’s a sampling of the 600+ comments on the Charlotte Agenda Instagram account:
“I just feel like this is your new playground.”
“Look at Charlotte coming up.”
“I’ve been waiting for this forever!”
And what may be the most comment sentiment: “omg omg yayyyyyyy.”
A second Topgolf location in Charlotte is already in the works.
Plans call for a second Topgolf location and an apartment community (rent will be about $1,200) on 65 acres up in the University City area, by I-85 and Mallard Creek Church Road.
The project is going through rezoning with the City Council right now, so it is still a ways off.
The area is all wooded right now, but it does back up to a neighborhood.
Some people are upset about it.
People who live in that neighborhood right next door are concerned that the Topgolf will be too noisy and brightly lit. Valid concern. Topgolf says they’ll be able to position the lights toward the highway so it won’t shine on the houses.
If I had to bet, I think the rezoning goes through and Topgolf comes to University City.
Will north Charlotte embrace Topgolf as much as south Charlotte?
My guess is yes.
