Reader request: Are there any good local doughnuts north of the city?

Why, yes, there are. Although Dunkin’ Donuts is the most prevalent doughnut chain in Charlotte (considerably more so than NC native Krispy Kreme), smaller specialty shops have been popping up across the city.

Unfortunately, newer local doughnut darlings like Joe’s Doughs in Optimist Park [permanently closed], the Your Mom’s Donuts in Matthews, and Sugar and Rise down in Ballantyne aren’t exactly convenient for people living in northside neighborhoods like University or nearby suburbs like Huntersville.

But there’s hope in some older, more established bakeries on the north end of town. Here are six spots.
