A new coffee shop is coming to Commonwealth Avenue right across the street from Common Market.
Undercurrent Coffee will open in 2017 next door to Moxie Mercantile.
Owners and longtime Plaza Midwood residents Todd and Erin Huber are excited to add their offering to the neighborhood.
“We celebrate our neighborhood, our journey and the many passions that come together under our roof,” their website reads. “And we invite you to pull up a chair and join us.”
Undercurrent Coffee will occupy the building that formerly housed Sahara Hookah Lounge and more recently Me Boutique Salon.
Demolition is under way and will include a full interior renovation on the 2,000-square-foot space.
They’re still several months out from opening but have already recruited some serious talent to direct the operation.
Diana Mnatsakanyan, formerly of The Daily Press, will develop the coffee program and run the shop. She’s a Specialty Coffee Association of America Barista Guild Certified pro who also trains other baristas.
The coffee program she’s building at Undercurrent is serious. In fact, the team meticulously interviewed more than a dozen roasters before landing on their preferred coffee provider (which is still a secret).
The food program is also in the works now and Aaron Tran, who has worked at Atherton Market and 300 East, is developing the menu. (You should do what I did and stalk your way through every single drool-worthy photo he’s ever posted on Instagram. We’re in for a treat with whatever he’s cooking up.)
Stay tuned for more.
Undercurrent is in its very early stages of development but I already can’t wait for it to open. A city can never have too many coffee shops.
