Grocery delivery just turned 21.

Starting tomorrow, Shipt, an on-demand grocery delivery service, will add beer and wine delivery in the Charlotte market.

The service rolled out here last month in a retail partnership with Harris Teeter, and Charlotte is now the first of Shipt’s 30 cities to deliver alcohol and groceries from the same location.

With the addition of beer and wine to Shipt’s online inventory, Harris Teeter’s full selection of in-stock items is now available for delivery through the app.

For alcohol delivery purchases, customers will have to scan their IDs using the app to place the order and then show it again to the delivery person upon arrival.

Shipt “shoppers” (those who purchase and run the deliveries) will receive extra training in alcohol delivery procedures.

Shipt’s pricing is pretty straight forward.

They operate on a membership model ($14/month or $99/year) with unlimited free delivery on orders over $35, now inclusive of alcohol. If your grocery total is less than $35, you’ll incur a $7 delivery fee.

You pay for everything (including tip, if you so choose) through the app.

Like Uber, Shipt operates on a crowdsourced employee model.

Shipt shoppers purchase, process and deliver your grocery order using their own vehicles. According to Shipt, they earn anywhere from $15 to $25 an hour and also receive a free membership for their own deliveries.
