Providence High had the top SAT scores in Charlotte this year

Providence High students posted the highest average SAT scores in Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools among this year’s graduates, newly released data from the state shows.

The south Charlotte school’s scores were followed closely by Myers Park High, another campus in a higher-income area. Interestingly, a relatively new magnet program came in third — Levine Middle College High on the campus of CPCC in Matthews.

Private schools were not included in the data from the state.

Charlotte schools with higher concentrations of low-income students had lower scores on the SAT, mirroring what you find in school letter grades and in other measures of academic achievement. Like proficiency on state tests, scores on standardized tests like SAT correlate highly with income.

And as always, the raw numbers don’t always tell the full story.

Low-income schools have succeeded in raising the total percentage of students who take the test, an indicator of preparation for college-level studies. Two years ago, only about one-third of seniors at West Charlotte and West Mecklenburg  took the SAT. This year, it was about 50 percent.

Here are some of the raw numbers.

I’ve omitted data on the number and percentages of students who took the test, scores in individual components of the test and previous year data simply to make it easier to read. If you want all that, download it here.

Note: Three schools did not have enough students take the SAT for their results to be published. Two of them, Hawthorne High and the Performance Learning Center, have large populations of nontraditional students. The third is one of Olympic High’s schools, in Technology Entrepreneurship & Advanced Manufacturing school. Their campus is divided into four schools.

Nerd note: The SAT changed its format this year, so the data isn’t immediately comparable to past years. It also only includes tests taken through January of this year.
