Charlotte Plaza — the big black-glass building on College Street — will soon be getting a major makeover on the inside.

This is the one that’s home to Charlotte School of Law, Panera Bread and Carolina Ale House. The architectural firm Gensler is overseeing the project.

Gensler says that the outside of the building is known for being dark and reflective. After the project is done, the inside will be light and open, with plenty of meeting and gathering spaces.

Here’s what it looks like today.

Here’s what it will look like.

Look for a clear entryway, more natural light, new escalators and new technology.

The cost is expected to be $14 million.

Work will be complete in 2018.

Charlotte Plaza is 27 stories tall and opened in 1982. It’s 92 percent leased.
