If you’re a City Center YMCA regular and you traveled over the long weekend, you’re coming home to an all new Dowd YMCA.

The city’s busiest branch made some major changes to its open gym offering, adding a Body-Solid hexagon training rig to the third floor fitness area.

This is the space that used to house the Roc-It strength equipment but if you’re a fan of those machines, don’t panic. They’ve just been moved over by the cycle studio. The red Nautilus strength machines were de-duplicated and moved into the area near the gymnasiums.

For the most part, all your favorite equipment is still there. You just might have to wander around for a minute to find it.

So what exactly is this thing?

It’s a functional hexagon-shaped training rig with optional attachments to facilitate a full-body workout at one station. To the uninitiated, it might not look like much but this one machine houses monkey bars, pull-up and flying pull-up bars, wall ball targets, parallel dip bars, suspension rings and more.

Here’s a look at the rig in the warehouse at Carolina Fitness Equipment.

Y trainers will be hosting free clinics all month to walk clients through how to best utilize the new equipment.

Exactly how to use this rig isn’t necessarily intuitive if you’ve never been on one before. Stop by one of the free 45-minute clinics below to learn how to navigate it. (Drop-ins welcome. No registration.)

This week’s classes are:

Tuesday 9/6: 6:30 a.m., 10 a.m., 12:30 p.m. and 4:15 p.m.

Wednesday 9/7: 7 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Thursday 9/8: 6 a.m., 8 a.m., 9 a.m., 12:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Friday 9/9: 9 a.m., 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.

And that’s not all. More changes are on the way for the Dowd.

The new rig will be the first of many changes for the Dowd over the next year or so. The location is about to undergo a massive $20 million renovation project that will include a 600-space parking deck and 28,000 square feet of additional facility space. Read more about the project here.

Andrew and I are both diehard Dowd Y enthusiasts so maybe we’ll see you there. New to the facility? Check out my tour here.
