There’s a development boom happening around Montford Drive, one of south Charlotte’s prime entertainment districts.
More than 1,000 apartment units are being planned or built, and developers are saying this could be the “next hip area” in Charlotte.
Neighborhood leaders have spent the last year or so trying to build more community cohesiveness. One of the first steps? A name for the area that everyone can get behind.

Now they’ve settled on a name: Montford Park.
The name is a mashup of sorts of the two most common things people call this area. Surveys last year showed that 28 percent of people called it the “Montford area” while another 25 percent called it the “Park Road Shopping Center area,” or something similar.
The rebranding effort is being spearheaded by Rachel Russell, who recently left Grubb Properties to launch a development office for Indianapolis-based Milhaus.
A board is being formed to oversee the neighborhood activities, and there’s likely to be a merchants happy hour in September to build support. A big unveiling and block party is in the works for later this fall.
