Bicycle Benefits, a program designed to encourage a commitment to cleaner air and healthier people based out of New York, uses a reward system to get people to get on their bike instead of into their cars.
When the program expanded to Charlotte, it quickly gained a large following.
On top of creating a healthier community in Charlotte, the program decreases parking demand in the city and safer cycling situations, which are so needed that there’s an entire class dedicated to them.
[Agenda story: Everything I thought I knew about safe cycling was wrong]
So how does it work?
Riders buy a Bicycle Benefits sticker ($5) from businesses around the city – everywhere from restaurants and cafés to book stores and cheese shops – that have joined the the program, put the sticker on their helmet (this is to increase helmet usage), get on their bike and start saving. It’s that simple.
The number of businesses around Charlotte that participate is staggering at just under 170.
So put your keys back on the shelf and, if you don’t have your own bike, go grab a B-Cycle.
