Kimi Pace, of Covet Atelier, has been focusing her efforts on Covet for over a year. There have been successes and failures over that time, but recently, she’s found a chance to grow her business that seems to truly be working.

If you don’t know what Covet Atelier is, I’m happy to share. I’ve been following Kimi’s story since we met last year to talk about a Kickstarter she was running. She had the dream of bringing together makers from all over the Carolinas, onto one website where customers could connect and buy from their favorite local artisans. Covet Atelier was planned to be a full-fledged online retail destination, but the Kickstarter just wasn’t meant to be. Kimi went back to the drawing board and decided on a new plan of action: curated gift boxes and pop-up shops across Charlotte.

Pace planned her own exclusive pop-up shops on a weekly basis and participated in larger markets around the city. You could find her at least once a week at a local brewery, bar, or restaurant selling individual products and gift boxes with fun themes, surrounded by a small crowd of people wanting to scoop up her makers’ collective handmade goods. She started having repeat customers (myself and my mother being two of those customers) who reaped the benefits of her relationships with Carolina locals.

Now though, she’s started to outgrow Charlotte. It’s not to say she won’t continue to pop-up now and again here, but the positive attention on her business has coffee shops, breweries, and the like in other Carolina towns asking her to travel and setup shop. She’s taking the Find + Covet Pop-up Shop to the NC coast and mountains and has dates scheduled in upstate South Carolina.

Between the support from Free Range and her event partners, Voila Paper Co. and Gateau Baking Co., she knows the pop-up tour will find success no matter what. “It felt wonderful to give the world a look at what I hope Covet Atelier can become and to show off over 40 incredibly talented artisans from North and South Carolina,” said Pace.

There are still plans to grow her website to shop Covet’s curated makers, but for now, the pop-up series will bring each artisan to towns that can appreciate and get excited about their goods.
