Google Fiber has low-key introduced its packages and pricing for the Charlotte market.

Pricing ranges from $50 per month to $130 per month for the works, according to information recently posted on their Charlotte website. As everyone was expecting, there’s no free option. In some of the earlier Fiber cities, Google had offered free internet after a $300 installation fee. But the company’s been dropping that as an option.

Why post the prices now when service is still a ways off? It’s part of a pilot program Google is running where they run fiber all the way up to the home at the same time they’re building in the neighborhood. That will give those houses first access when service gets switched on.

They’ll also be taking over the Dixie Tavern building soon.

I’m told they’ll be taking control June 1. There’s been a ton of renovations that’s going to make it look something like this.

Still no word on when service will be turned on.

Google Fiber has been signing up apartment complexes to the service and installing fiber in commercial buildings as well. Some areas of the city area also nearly ready to switch on as the Fiber hut and wire construction continues.

They’re increasingly in competition with AT&T, which is a little farther along on getting people signed up for its gigabit internet service, Gigapower.
