Last week I promised Tryon Place, but that’s so far off (2018 at the earliest), I figured we would get to a few things that are more pressing. Let’s stay in 3rd Ward because there is just so much going on.

Apartments are popping up all over the city and 3rd Ward is not immune to it. As I type this there are four major apartment projects that are under construction. Two high rises and two mid rises, we will cover one of each here. First up is the Mint Apartments, then we will discuss the Museum Tower.

What is it?

The 177 unit Mint Apartments is located along Graham Street in between 4th and Trade.

Why do you care?

The Mint at first glance seems like just another mid-rise apartment going up in Charlotte. And while I must at admin, at first glance it does, I implore you to take another look.

The brick they are using is top notch and the building gives off a very classy vibe. There is a small retail space (likely a convenience store or coffee shop) going on Trade St and a 2500 sq. ft. space for likely a pub (great for after work and before baseball game drinks!) at the corner of 4th and Graham.

Adding more residents and retail to 3rd Ward will do wonders for the lively atmosphere of the area and will just continue to add to the walkability. I won’t go over all the apartment complex amenities with you; I’ll let their leasing agents do that so keep an eye on their website.

When can you use it?

Their website should be live in June to begin leasing with the first residents moving in by the end of the month or early July.

They are actively marketing the bar/restaurant space at the corner of 4th and Graham and I hope they have someone in there and opened by Panthers season.

So the Mint Apartments…not bad right? Doesn’t do much for the skyline though. Keep reading because the Museum Tower is a beauty and will add some hefty density to the skyline.

What is it?

525 S. Church Apartments, also known as the Museum Tower. This is a 393-unit, 447 feet tall apartment building going right on top of the Mint Museum roof.

Why do you care?

I know those who work on the south side of Uptown may be upset their Starbucks is now more difficult to get to, or their cars are more difficult to park, but trust me it’s worth it.

The long planned tower (there was originally going to be a condo tower here when the Mint Museum was first built) is finally being finished and will do wonders for our already amazing skyline. But adding density to the skyline aside, this building will again add more residents into 3rd Ward and only further increase the need for excellent bars and restaurants in the area. The foot traffic created by this building will absolutely be noticeable and I can’t wait until there is even more walkability to the area.

When can you use it?

No definitive date has been set yet, but it is looking like this will be ready to go late 2016. They have the benefit of not having to do foundation work and really they just have to go up. Can’t wait to see this thing topped off.
