This weird intersection in Plaza Midwood is going to get more pedestrian friendly

The intersection of 10th Street, Central Avenue and Louise Avenue in Plaza Midwood is massive and intimidating.

It actually has a name: the “Central Five Points Intersection.” You may also consider it in Elizabeth or Belmont. Regardless, it’s not the prettiest or most pleasant place to walk around.

Here’s what the city itself has to say: “Pavement areas are wide, sight lines across the street are poor, and traffic signal timing for the five-legged intersection limits available crossing time.”

But it is home to cool places like Central Coffee and Intermezzo.

The city of Charlotte is about to spend half a million to fix it up.

The work is going to include pedestrian refuge islands (safe places in the middle of the road) and nicer sidewalks and crosswalks.

The plan came together in 2013 but the city council is set to approve the contract Monday.

Look for it to be done by the fourth quarter 2016.
