We told you a few months ago that South End’s original Food Truck Friday would be moving to Sycamore Brewing — just as the brewery expands with a massive new taproom. We now have our first look at what all this will look like. And it looks awesome.
First, Food Truck Friday. Quick recap: This had been held for years at the intersection of Tryon, Camden and Park. The lot got sold to a developer who is turning it into the HQ of Dimensional Fund Advisors. That means Common Market and Food Truck Friday were left to find new homes.
Justin Brigham, owner of Sycamore Brewing, has taken over planning for the food truck rally. The plan is to have 12 food trucks each week, half of which will be regulars (including Tin Kitchen, Papi Queso, Southern Cake Queen and Roaming Fork) and the other half will rotate.
One new addition to the truck scene: Sycamore itself has just purchased a 1938 fire truck that they’ll upfit to be a beer truck with about eight different brews.
Sycamore also just bought 28 Munich-style tables for the rallies. They’ll shut down the primary parking lot to make it all pedestrian. They also bought a new steam whistle that they’ll sound at 5 p.m. Flintstones-style to signal the start of the rally.
The rally has a new website and logo to distinguish itself from all the other food truck rallies springing up. First one will be March 11. Family- and dog-friendly.
But check out this new taproom
All of these plans have yet to go before the city, so things are still in flux. But the idea is to expand the central courtyard and have it lead into a big new taproom that will overlook the Charlotte Rail Trail. Look for public art along the trail and a decorative fence separating the brewery from the trail and picnic tables adjacent to it.
The new taproom itself is going to have a tree motif, with two new 20-foot trees put in and green sail shades that will make the place look like a tree from the air.
There will be a bar downstairs and a bar on the massive 2,400-square-foot rooftop patio. Plus a bathroom twice the size of the one in the current taproom.
Construction should take about four months once approval comes through. Brigham says he’s optimistic it will all be done by the end of the year.
