“You have to try Soul. The wait can be over an hour, but it’s worth it.”

Even before moving to Charlotte, I’ve been hearing about Soul Gastrolounge from numerous people. The restaurant is in the Plaza Midwood area at the corner of Central Avenue and Pecan Avenue, one that I would completely miss if I didn’t know was there.

As proper planning would have it (read: random luck), I headed there on a Tuesday evening and scored a table with no wait. Soul is a rather small restaurant, the tables are intimate, but close enough to my neighbors where I could hear their entire dinner conversation.

The menu offers plenty and I mean PLENTY of options in small plates. Try a little of this, try a little of that, find out your favorites so you can return and order them again.

The sushi was a delicious choice along with the shells and cheese stuffed with pork belly BBQ. Their special dessert of the night was a peanut butter cupcake with chocolate topping whipped until it was light and fluffy. All I can say is yum.

I wanted a well-rounded experience so I wasn’t shy when it came to ordering, but that approach isn’t always good for the budget. Expect to spend some money or go with a friend to split plates and the bill. At the very least, try something you normally wouldn’t, you and your taste buds may be surprised!
