Over the past month, three of the South End area’s best known beer shops have been broken into under similar circumstances: Common Market, Good Bottle Co. and Rhino Market.
Common Market and Rhino Market had two break-ins in a row.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are not investigating the cases as related at this point, but the three shops are now installing metal bars on their glass doors to keep this from happening again.
Common Market owner Blake Barnes said the South End store was hit twice within nine days. Both cases were a smash-and-grab, stealing cigarettes. The break-in caused more than than $2,000 in damage, with about $300 worth of product stolen. Common Market has now put up metal bars across the front door.
Rhino Market also suffered two break-ins, with the thief taking cigarettes each time. The market reported a broken door and 20-30 cartons of cigarettes stolen.
Good Bottle’s front door suffered the same fate, but nothing was stolen. Maybe because they don’t sell cigarettes?
Each case is in a different CMPD district and has its own detective assigned to it. “We are always looking for cases with similarities and while these cases may be related we base our investigations on the evidence at hand,” Sgt. Caleb Komis said.
