10 new patios being built right now that you’re going to love come springtime

Are you already looking forward to spring? I understand. Here are 10 spots where you’re going to be drinking a beer when the weather warms up (in no particular order).

(1) Farmer & Butcher

Concept: Mediterranean smokehouse.

Patio Analysis: Sneaky large. They’ll be a large area where sun lovers can sit and then a shaded area close to the restaurant. Seating will be a mix of wooden bench style tables, square tables and cool looking picnic tables with built-in round seating. Solid people-watching during the “stroll time” hours on East Blvd.

Timing: Likely to open in December.

Location: Dilworth, next to Showmars and across the street from Summit Room (1608 East Blvd).

Menu: Serving grilled and wood-fired dishes like pork, lamb, chicken, seafood, calamari and grilled vegetables.

Adult Beverages: TBD. But, the owner (Martin Sprock) also owns RuRu’s Tacos & Tequila and Leroy Fox – so he knows what he’s doing.

(2) CO

Concept: Vietnamese noodle house (Pan-Asian cuisine).

Patio Analysis: Cool, alleyway placement next to Sir Edmond Halley’s. 

Timing: Will open in early December.

Location: Next to Omega Sports at Park Road Shopping Center.

Menu: Dumplings (ex, pork & ginger gyoza, $5), small bites (ex, pork & crab spring rolls, $7.50), noodles (ex, pad thai, $14), salads (ex, vietnamese chicken, $10), banh mi (ex, caramel pork, $9.50) and broth noodles (ex, beef pho, $12).

Adult Beverages: Sake, sake infusions, signature cocktails (ex, Lychee Daiquiri $9, Sriracha Mary $8, Mangosteen Red Sangria $9), draft beer and wine.

(3) Foxcroft Wine & Co Dilworth

Concept: Wine bar

Patio Analysis: Below are photos of just the beginning. It’s going to get much cooler.

Timing: Open now, but the patio won’t be completely set up until springtime.

Location: Dilworth’s Kenilworth Commons shopping center (next to the Smoothie King).

Menu: House Smoked & Spiced Nuts ($6), Truffle Fries ($6), Lamb Sliders with Harissa, Cucumber & Chevre ($12), Beef Sliders with Gruyere Cheese & Caramelized Onions ($13) and more.

Adult Beverages: Wine. Lots of wine. 40 wines by the glass. 12 taps for beer enthusiasts.

(4) Seoulfood Meat Market

Concept: Korean BBQ.

Patio Analysis: 600 square feet. Small to medium size but with bar access and on the street (inviting).

Timing: Early 2016.

Location: South End. 1400 S. Church Street (at the intersection of Church and Bland).

Menu: Korean BBQ with American flavors. Half of the menu will be focused on BBQ and the other half on Korean fried chicken. Owner Timothy Chun told us that when it comes to their chicken the “skin stays crispy and the meat stays moist.” The style is extremely popular in Korea.

Adult Beverages: Full bar. Drink menu inspired by Asian cocktails (don’t worry, there will be some local craft beer, too).

(5) Ed’s Tavern

Concept: It’s Ed’s. You’ve been, I’m not going through the menu or drinks. It’s a Charlotte go-to sports bar.

Patio Analysis: It’s massive. Two tiers.

Timing: End of 2015.

(6) Essex

Concept: Bar & bistro.

Patio Analysis: Covered patio in the heart of Uptown. Will provide diners and drinkers an amazing people watching vantage point at the busiest intersection in the city.

Timing: Early 2016.

Location: Uptown at the square.

Menu: Initially said to be Mediterranean based, but that may change.

Adult Beverages: Full bar.


(7) Duckworth’s Uptown

Concept: It’s open now, fun sports bar. Oh, and the cellar (huge fans).

Patio Analysis: Patio presence being added to Tryon Street.

Timing: Early 2016.

Location: Uptown.


(8) Bulldog Beer & Wine South End

Concept: Beer and wine shop.

Patio Analysis: Chill with games. Great view of the city. There is a big patio along the front of the building. Great view of the city. Plans eventually call for it to be closed in so it can be enjoyed in any weather.

Timing: Late 2015.

Location: South End.

Menu: None

Adult Beverages: Beer and wine (thus the name).

(9) Sea Level

Concept: Seafood.

Patio Analysis: Covered and accessed off of 5th Street in the Hearst building.

Timing: Early 2016.

Location: Uptown on 5th.

Menu: Seafood.

Adult Beverages: Full bar.

(10) Magnolia Emporium Alley

Concept: European style alleyway, with art on the buildings, overhead lights and funky furniture.

Patio Analysis: Great place to grab a glass of wine from Gallery or beer from Craft and enjoy the weather or artists working.

Timing: Early 2016.

Location: South End behind Craft.

Menu: None.

Adult Beverages: None, get drinks from Gallery or Craft.

Honorable mentions: Patios that will be done in 2016, but not ready for springtime

  • Embassy Suites Uptown – going to have an awesome patio outside their bar.
  • Ink & Ivy – building a massive structure to enhance the patio experience on the parking lot at Packard Place.
  • Big Peach Market– going to have a big biergarten and wine garden, this is in the same building as Seoul Food.
