Bank of America is the No. 1 most desirable place to work in Charlotte, followed by Red Ventures.

Survey results: We sent a survey to Agenda newsletter readers pre-coronavirus covering topics ranging from open office floor plans to employer benefits to most desirable places to work. More than 1,000 people responded.

As part of the survey, we asked the question, “Which Charlotte-area employer would you most like to work for?” Below are the results. Unsurprisingly, most of our area’s largest employers dominate the responses.

Coronavirus: The pandemic and subsequent restrictions have affected nearly every industry in Charlotte. Nearly one million North Carolinian’s have filed for unemployment since March 15, approximately 20 percent of the state’s workforce. If you’re looking for work, use this as a guide. Here’s a list of the 12 most desirable places to work ranked according to a survey of more than 1,000 Agenda readers. Plus, the positions currently open at each.

No. 1: Bank of America (16,000 local employees | 107 open jobs in Charlotte, including data scientist and financial analyst)

No. 2: Red Ventures (1,871 local employees | 22 open jobs in Charlotte, including copywriter and payroll specialist)

No. 3: Atrium Health (36,000 local employees | 887 open jobs in Charlotte, including registered nurse and dietitian nutritionist)

No. 4: Wells Fargo (27,500 local employees | 370 open jobs in Charlotte, including business operations lead and loan underwriter)

No. 5: Duke Energy (7,700 local employees | 0 open jobs in Charlotte)

Tie-No. 6: Honeywell (745 local employees | 60 open jobs in Charlotte, including IT manager and lead software architect)

Tie-No. 6: Novant Health (12,650 local employees | 540 open jobs in Charlotte, including pharmacy tech and interpreter services coordinator)

No. 8: Carolina Panthers (200 local employees | 7 open jobs in Charlotte, including senior video editor and production associate)

No. 9: Lowe’s (11,000 local employees | 78 open jobs in Charlotte, including head cashier and sales specialist)

No. 10: Ally Bank (1,807 local employees | 46 open jobs in Charlotte, including salesforce developer and account manager)

No. 11: AvidXchange (1,124 local employees | 15 open jobs in Charlotte, including business insights developer and digital marketing manager)

No: 12: LendingTree (549 local employees | 10 open jobs in Charlotte, including contact center representative and sales manager)

Honorable mentions: Other employers that didn’t crack the top 12, but had significant mentions include: Microsoft, Movement Mortgage, Truist, Passport, Deloitte, Barings, NASCAR, Amazon, and the Charlotte Hornets.

What do employees actually value?

We also asked in the survey, “As an employee, what one thing do you value most in a job?” Respondents could select only one of the 11 options below. Compensation was by far the most important, followed by career development opportunities, which came in second.

  • Relationship with supervisor/manager (9%)
  • Fun workplace culture (9%)
  • Challenging work (8%)
  • Job security (6%)
  • Vacation/paid time off (5%)

  • Reputation as a great place to work (4%)
  • Health care benefits (2%)
  • Retirement benefits (<1%)

More benefits: What other unique Charlotte workplace benefits do people want? In the open text box on the survey, many mentioned free coffee and beer at the office, matching charitable donations, flexible work schedules, tickets to sporting events, unlimited paid time off, and dogs allowed in the office.

Some rare benefits mentioned included monthly massage day, pet insurance, $25,000 towards fertility/adoption, beer cart, meditation rooms, half-day Fridays, massive Halloween party, and kombucha on tap.
