The first day of school for 2019-2020 is August 26, which means open enrollment for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is happening now.

Whether your family is new to Charlotte or you’ve got a little one entering Kindergarten, enrolling your child in CMS should be the first item on your back-to-school to-do list. Keep in mind, if your child is already enrolled, you don’t need to enroll again.

Luckily, enrollment is pretty simple. Here’s everything you need to know.

First, make sure your child meets North Carolina age requirements to attend school.

Students must be five-years-old on or before August 31 to enter Kindergarten.

Students applying for the Montessori schools Pre-K program must be four-years-old on or before August 31 in order to be considered.

Next, you’ll need a few documents to enroll, and you can download most of them online.

In order to enroll in CMS as a new student, you’ll need these documents:

  • A new student enrollment form
  • A copy of your child’s birth certificate
  • Proof of residency
  • Safe Schools Declaration
  • Immunization records
  • Health assessment

Download the forms you need here.

Once you’ve got all your forms, simply drop them off at any CMS school.

You can also drop them off at any learning community office or the Student Placement Office at Smith Family Center off Tyvola Road.

If you’re enrolling an international student or English isn’t your first language, CMS has people to help you navigate the process.

Head over to CMS’s International Center for assistance with educational services that meet your individual needs. It’s located at the Smith Family Center off Tyvola Road.

Habla español? You can still enroll online. Just hit the ‘español’ button to switch the text.

After you’ve submitted the enrollment forms, you’ll get information on next steps.

From transportation and bus schedules to school supply lists and classroom assignments, the school contact will share how to find out everything you need to get your child ready for the first day. Boom. It’s that easy.
