View renderings: Plans take shape for former Jackalope Jack’s land in Elizabeth

Crescent Communities, the development company behind huge projects like Whole Foods Uptown and Ally Charlotte Center, has created plans for the 1.7 acres that were previously home to Jackalope Jack’s and Philosopher’s Stone in Elizabeth.

The plan calls for a four story, 103,500-square-foot office and retail building (max height of 65 feet) on the corner of Seventh and Caswell in Elizabeth. The project will have its public rezoning hearing on Monday night. Crescent hopes to break ground early next year with a completion date of late

With the recent addition of Caswell StationThe Crunkleton and The Stanley along with popular mainstays like Bang Bang Burger, Showmars, Starbucks, Max’s Sandwich Shop, Ho Ho Cherry House, Sunflour and Burn Bootcamp, this block in Elizabeth could start to feel more like Camden Avenue in South End.

Design: It’s incredible. Crescent plans to utilize the corner to give Charlotte a true “flatiron” corner that will feature a sunken patio and a streetscape that has pedestrian scale and approachability. Expect public art as well as outdoor patio and terrace space. It reminds me of a beautiful old building that was renovated and spruced up for a modern day. It isn’t overly flashy or loud.

Background: Faison, the landowner, had previously proposed an apartment community a few years ago. After a ton of back and forth between the developer and Elizabeth community, the project wound up looking gorgeous — albeit unfeasible. So the while the Jackalope Jack’s and Philospher’s Stone buildings have long been demolished, the site has sat vacant.


Parking situation: Pecan/Caswell and Seventh is already a busy intersection, so expect the community to be interested in plans to alleviate the traffic headache. Good news is Crescent plans to build a parking deck that will have the same ratio of spaces as South End’s new RailYard project. And since the proposed project is mostly office, spots should be readily available during the nights and evenings.
