Charlotte City Council approved the rezoning of an old 1920s storefront in Midtown, making way for the neighborhood’s first brewery.
The exact location is near the corner of 4th St and S. Torrence, which is on the border of the Midtown and Elizabeth neighborhoods. It’s near Domino’s Pizza if you need a landmark.
The brewery, which does not yet have a name, plans to open later this summer. Greg Grueneich and Brian Wallace are the owners behind the project.
“We are making a substantial investment into refurbishing a 1926 building which is currently home to the American Billiards Company,” Brian Wallace told the Agenda. “We want to maintain as much of the history of the building as we can while adding several features to the property which will include a large outdoor space, elevated patio, and private event space.”
Plans for the Midtown brewery call for a large outdoor patio fronting 4th, along with a 750 square foot “elevated patio” toward the interior of the site that’ll likely have cool Uptown views.
“We chose Midtown due to the surrounding neighborhoods, existing businesses, and a huge potential for area growth,” said Brian. “We’re very excited about the 2nd phase of the CityLynx Gold Line which will connect Midtown to Plaza Midwood and Uptown. In addition, CPCC has been a very welcoming neighbor as we plan to partner with their culinary department for food & beer pairing classes as well as their home brewing class.”
Parking in the immediate area is a challenge, but if the brewery produces superior product, and the elevated patio has a great view, this brewery will be very successful.
It’s great to see the brewing industry save another historic building in Charlotte, and the American Billiards building, while not remarkable, might not have seen new life without this brewery coming along.
By the end of this year, we’ll have a total of 30 breweries in our city (not counting the surrounding area). This Midtown brewery now becomes the sixth new brewery under construction — joining Armored Cow (University City), Middle James Brewing (Pineville), Protagonist (NoDa), Lower Left Brewing (LoSo) and Southern Solstice Brewing (Gold District).
