My son is 5 months old. 17 years from now, when he’s a senior at Myers Park High School (our school district), he’ll wake up to the Charlotte Agenda.
Media is not a sprint, it’s a marathon. There are no shortcuts. It’s painful. It takes years and requires relentless execution, day after day. We’re prepared.
We have no interest in scaling to other cities – instead of going wide we want to go deep. We bleed Charlotte. We’re in love with this city.
Why we exist:
To make Charlotte the smartest, most human city in the world.
What we will do in 2015:
Send out the Agenda (daily newsletter) each morning at 7 am. Sign up.
Publish 3-7 stories at 7 am each weekday morning.
Publish 1-3 stories at 4 pm each weekday evening.
*Even though we love events, video, audio and print – we will not do these until 2016.
What we believe:
We believe in simplicity.
We believe that readers are smart and should be treated as such.
We believe in working with your best friends.
We believe that great cities drive civilization forward and Charlotte is a great city.
We believe in only doing things if you can be #1 in the world at those things.
We believe that while ideas matter, execution matters more.
We believe in doing things that we’re deeply passionate about.
We believe in drinking beer at work.
We believe that while data matters, human instincts matter more.
We believe that innovation comes from small teams given extreme freedom.
We believe that great stories can come from anyone.
We believe in only doing things that make mom proud.
We believe that you must face reality as it is, not as you wish it to be.
We believe in being straightforward, transparent and honest.
We believe that it’s always about people.
You can question our content. You can question our product. You can question our strategy. But you will never question two things: our character and our effort.
We will exhaust ourselves to make Charlotte the smartest, most human city in the world and we will do it with integrity. I can’t wait for 17 years from now when, over a bowl of Cheerios, my son says “Dad, I don’t know what you were thinking with that lame first welcome post, but today’s Agenda is great.” And, “Dad, what’s a newsletter?”
