Charlotte has something of a reputation as a corporate town. We’re blessed to have nearly 300 of the Fortune 500 companies with presences in the area.

But in Charlotte and across the state, it’s small businesses that are making up a huge chunk of the job growth. Nearly 9 out of 10 businesses in North Carolina have fewer than 20 employees. Mecklenburg County has approximately 36,000 businesses. You do the math.

We at the Agenda set out last year to recognize one of our city’s impressive small business owners. After receiving scores of nominations, we came up with a list of 12 tremendous small businesspeople in industries ranging from coffee to design to real estate.

We need your help again.

For the 2019 awards, consideration will be given to the business’s growth, innovation and culture — with extra weight given to excellence in the past year. In your nomination, tell us their story and what makes them remarkable.

What’s a small business? For the purposes of these awards, we’ll consider companies with fewer than 25 full-time employees and less than $10 million in revenue.

Please submit your nominations to andrew@charlotteagenda.com using the subject line “Small Businessperson of the Year nomination.” The deadline is March 1, 2019.
